Unblock BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer is the UK’s leading TV catch-up service. Aimed specifically at UK residents, it allows free access to recent episodes of almost all of the BBC’s vast range of content, much of which is of a high quality and well-renowned across the world.

iPlayer is region locked unless you’re located within the UK, so you’ll need to unblock BBC iPlayer if you want to watch it from elsewhere. The fact you can do this is great news to many people, especially travelling Brits who desperately want to catch up on their favourite shows whilst away from home.

Unblock iPlayer

Britain has an enviable reputation for quality TV content, largely thanks to the public funded British Broadcasting Corporation (The BBC).

Many of the BBC’s shows are known worldwide, including the (now controversially discontinued) Top Gear, as well as things like Doctor Who, Eastenders, The Office and The Apprentice.

BBC iPlayer is the BBC’s streaming service, and is completely free to use. It usually provides access to shows for around a month after they are shown on live TV, but some content is left up for much longer, and the BBC has also started experimenting with launching some content online first, such as the new sitcom Car Share, starring Peter Kay. Best of all, everything is completely “ad free.”

As well as catch-up content, BBC iPlayer offers several channels as a live stream, but legally you should have a UK TV licence to view them in this fashion.

Outside of the UK, iPlayer is blocked, which is a real pain for travelling Brits or anyone else who wishes to watch any of the huge selection of content. Thankfully, all of the Smart DNS services below make it easy to unblock BBC iPlayer so the content can be accessed from anywhere.

Please note we have recently received some reports that suggest some Smart DNS services are currently struggling to maintain access to BBC iPlayer. Please make full use of your free trial or check with your chosen provider’s support department to confirm the current situation.

Winner – UnBlock-Us

Unblock-Us Logo

Positives: Free trial with no credit card required, great support, well-established company

Negatives: No Bitcoin payment option

Unblock-Us is ideal if you need to unblock BBC iPlayer from outside the UK. We can happily recommend it as a beginners’ option too, because the instructions provided are really helpful. Even though DNS changes are pretty easy to handle, iPlayer’s availability across lots of different devices may mean you need a helping hand. There is also software available to do the work for you if you are a Windows user!

Unblock-Us allow as many devices as you want to use the service, so long as they are on the same network, so you can easily get your computers, smart TVs and mobile devices all accessing iPlayer if you wish.

Support is also great here if you get stuck, and there’s a free trial. This is therefore our number one choice for iPlayer.

2. UnoDNS by UnoTelly

UnoTelly Logo

Positives: Guarantee and free trial, lots of channels available including iPlayer

Negatives: Ambiguous terms and conditions

UnoDNS from UnoTelly can help you unblock BBC iPlayer, and a lot more besides. They’re a great choice if you want to access to lots of different streaming services due to their “Dynamo” software, which gives fine control over region switching – you can watch iPlayer on one device while someone else watches, for example, the USA version of Netflix on another.

UnoDNS offer both a guarantee AND a free trial, so you can try them out with 100% confidence. After extensive trials of the service we’re pretty sure you’ll hang on to it and not be needing that guarantee!

3. HideIPVPN

HideIPVPN Logo

Positives: Guarantee and free trial, good quality support, wide range of payment options

Negatives: A few guarantee caveats

HideIPVPN is a well established company that started offering Smart DNS services as an alternative to VPN a couple of years ago. Everything works as it should, and is simple to setup so you can unblock BBC iPlayer in no time.

Pricing is good, but you can also make use of a free trial before you commit, and there’s a month of warranty too if you’re not happy. There are some caveats to this money-back offer, but this is only a minor criticism when some SmartDNS providers don’t provide one at all.

HideIPVPN will also prove particularly attractive to the privacy-conscious out there, because they allow payment via Bitcoin for total anonymity.

4. Blockless

Blockless Logo

Positives: Extra SmartVPN and AdBlocker features, good setup guides and support

Negatives: Not the cheapest service out there

If you’re looking to unblock BBC iPlayer and want to choose the service with the most “bells and whistles,” you’ll want to opt for Blockless.

In addition to a standard Smart DNS offering, you get ad-blocking software, some VPN functionality, and even a plug in for Chrome. These are “nice to haves” rather than essentials, but it’s still pleasing to see a provider look to provide some “added value.”

Support is great, and there are lots of setup guides for beginners. Blockless is well worth a prominent position on your SmartDNS shortlist for BBC iPlayer.

5. Unlocator

Unlocator Logo

Positives: 7 day free trial, Additional SmartVPN functionality

Negatives: Strict money back guarantee!

Unlocator is a Danish firm with a rather impressive Smart DNS offering. It will allow you to easily unblock BBC iPlayer, and plenty more services besides.

A notable feature is the existence of a “SmartVPN” option, useful for extra privacy or if you find yourself somewhere where a traditional Smart DNS setup won’t work, such as a hotel with a bespoke networking configuration.

Unlocator has put solid work into setup guides and documentation, so you should find everything you need. Their website is well-designed and pleasing to navigate too. Highly recommended.

Unblock BBC iPlayer Conclusion

It would be no exaggeration to say that BBC iPlayer is one of the best free streaming sites in the world. It boasts great content, there are no ads, and there are good apps for all kinds of devices. It’s just a horrible shame it only works while you’re in the UK. Thankfully, with any one of these recommended Smart DNS solutions, you can unblock BBC iPlayer wherever you happen to be. Enjoy!

  1. Hey Ben,

    Great site, very interesting content.

I had a q. for you. I’ve set up my own openVPN instance here at home on a spare Ubuntu box. The intent is that when I go on holidays I can still get my BBC fix. However, I’ve stumbled on a problem.

I’ve had a friend in Spain check my VPN for me to check all OK. If they run an iplocation checker it is showing UK which is what I was expecting / hoping for.

However, BBC still thinks that they are not in the UK. Is there thing I am missing here or is the BBC somehow detecting that VPN is being used and is therefore blocking the iPlayer access.

    Many thanks,

  2. I have a VPN account now to access BBC iplayer. I am not computer savvy. My VPN is in danger of losing its accessibility to bbc iPlayer. What is the advantage of using DNS over VPN?

    1. Hi there,

It’s all a bit of a cat and mouse game at the moment with iPlayer (and Netflix) clamping down on the use of both SmartDNS and VPN, and the providers quickly working to get around the blocks. My best advice is to make use of plenty of free trials, as you’ll generally be able to find a service that’s managing to stay one step ahead.
