5 Best Smart DNS Providers for a Mac

Using a Smart DNS service is a cheap and efficient way of browsing geo-restricted content that would otherwise be inaccessible to you. Smart DNS technology allows a consumer to view, stream, and download online content quickly to a broad range of devices including your Mac computer.

The latest and greatest operating system from Apple is OS X Yosemite. The system has been near universally praised for the improved interface over the previous offering Mountain Lion. It’s clean, it’s functional, and it’s powerful all the while maintaining the user-friendly platform that the Mac faithful have come to rely on. As you will see below, the Smart DNS setup is no different; you will be streaming online content on your Mac in minutes and in some cases, seconds if the provider has a dedicated client.

These rankings reflect our comprehensive look at the Smart DNS market. In an effort to analyze the providers through the lens of a Mac owner, we placed a great deal of value on ease of set up, the number of devices and/or IP addresses the service may be used from, and the number of channels offered. The table below represents our findings.

CactusVPN

4,9/5

  • PROS
  • Dedicated client for set-up
  • 7-day free trial
  • 131 popular streaming channels
  • Friendly and knowledgeable support
  • VPN and Proxy available
  • CONS
  • Have to change between US and UK Netflix through their website, only four countries unblocked

CactusVPN is one of only two providers that have a client in place to automatically ensure your computer is set-up and ready to roll. Couple this incredible software with their excellent customer service, large number of channels offered, and we were sufficiently impressed enough to declare them the single best option for Mac users.

CactusVPN has unblocked 131 channels in 4 countries, and they have these nicely organized on their website so you can quickly find out if the streaming service you are looking for will be unblocked on your Apple device. As with most Smart DNS services, CactusVPN Smart DNS allows you to use it from as many devices as you want as long they are all connected to the same IP address. So, stream away with your iPad, iPhone and Mac simultaneously.

Unlocator

4,8/5

Unlocator Logo

  • PROS
  • 7-day free trial
  • Detailed set-up guide
  • Lots of channels
  • Widely used API for helpful apps
  • CONS
  • Only one IP
  • T & Cs of money back guarantee

The Unlocator Smart DNS service is run by Linkwork ApS, who are based in Denmark. They boast an impressive number of unblocked channels, countries and a beautiful set-up guide to get your Mac up and running. From this, it is more than clear that Unlocator takes the Smart DNS business very seriously and should you have any issues, they will be able to help you out very quickly. They also provide you with access to their SmartVPN, which helps you access geo-locked content even if you’re on the move or if you’re the victim of DNS hijacking. The big downside of their service is that you’re only able to use it from one IP at a time.

While a Smart DNS service in no way provides protection of your online identity, it does give providers access to your browsing data. It is, therefore, nice to see that Unlocator has an exceptionally clear Privacy Policy, Terms of Use and even Cookie Policy. For these reasons, we recommend Unlocator as a viable option for all Mac users.

Unblock-Us

4,75/5

Unblock-Us Logo

  • PROS
  • 19 unique Netflix regions
  • Transparent customer service metrics
  • Easy to setup
  • One week free trial with no credit card necessary
  • CONS
  • Not able to cancel after payment
  • No Bitcoin accepted

Based in the USA, Unblock-Us has servers on three continents and nineteen countries, which is more than adequate for a Smart DNS provider. They allow multiple devices to run simultaneously as long as they are on the same network – this is a slight let down as some companies allow multiple IPs. Unblock-Us offer all the usual channels such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video. Additionally, they have 100’s of other unlocked channels ready for your Mac or TV (via AirPlay). You can quickly browse these by the following categories: On Demand, TV, Kids, Sports & Music. If you are a sports junkie, that needs to stream the big game on your Mac this may be your best Smart DNS option.

UnoTelly

4,75/5

UnoTelly Logo

  • PROS
  • Dynamo – region switching service is fantastic! 7-day money back guarantee and 8-day free trial
  • Plenty of options for getting free time
  • Lot of available channels
  • CONS
  • Access only from 1 IP
  • Terms of Service is very brief and ambiguous

UnoDNS is run by the Canadian-based company Unovation Inc that initially launched in 2011. Since then, they have become high-end providers in both the Smart DNS and a VPN service industry.

Unfortunately, they only allow access from one IP address which is a bit of a shame, but not a deal breaker as we understand why Smart DNS providers would be leery of allowing one person to pay, and dozens to piggyback. On the plus side, they have unlocked a substantial amount of channels for your viewing pleasure. The unique and impressive feature of UnoDNS is their Dynamo feature. Dynamo helps you select the region of a website (where there are more than one), and it is so good that you could watch up to 3 different regions of Netflix simultaneously on your Mac or other devices. Practically, this means you watch your movie from your preferred region while the kids upstairs watch theirs.

ibDNS

4,65/5

ibDNS Logo

  • PROS
  • All-in-one client for Mac
  • lots of countries and channels
  • extensive support options including remote assistance
  • VPN available
  • free trial and money back guarantee
  • Smart DNS can be used on two IPs! (in beta and only available to some plans)
  • CONS
  • Must define the 2nd address, still some bugs to be sorted through

Invisible Browsing VPN (ibVPN/ibDNS) is based in Romania and has a solid background in network management and services, which gives them a perfect platform to operate a Smart DNS service. Their ibDNS service allows access to over 100 channels in nine major countries worldwide, thereby providing access to plenty of content for your viewing pleasure.

While most Smart DNS providers limit their Smart DNS service to one IP location (so all devices must be on the same network), ibDNS allows a secondary IP address to be defined so you can use it with more devices and in more locations. At the moment though, since this is still in beta testing, some glitches can be expected, and this feature is only available on the Ultimate and Family VPN packages.

With a client dedicated to setting up your Mac, a price that is tough to beat, and excellent customer service, we have no trouble recommending Invisible Browsing VPN as a top shelf Smart DNS provider.

Setting up Smart DNS on Mac

Some providers that we have listed do have software for your Mac. However, not all of them do, and you might also prefer to do this manually. Here are the steps to do so:

  1. First open up the System Preferences window either via this icon Preferences icon - Mac, or the Apply icon in the top left of your screen.
    System Preferences Menu - Mac
  2. Next, click the Network icon.
    Main Preference Menu - Mac
  3. On this screen, ensure you are connected to the Internet and then open the Advanced button in the bottom right.
    Network Screen - 1
  4. Locate and open the DNS tab along the top menu.
    Network Screen 2 - DNS
  5. IMPORTANT TIP: Write down the numbers that are defaulted into the left box (you never know when you may need them). Now, click the small + icon beside the IPv4 or IPv6 addresses label.  Enter the number that your Smart DNS service provider gave you.
    DNS screen -3
  6. Click OK and you are are done. There is no need to restart your computer from this point. Just head over to your favorite streaming site and enjoy the show!

Smart DNS Mac Conclusion

With a client that allows for automatic configuration, a long list of channels, and a great support team, CactusVPN is your choice if you plan on streaming video on a Mac. While we value the dedicated server for configuration, it is not a mandatory tool in our opinion as changing your DNS settings is very easy to do. Even still, a dedicated client is useful to play with. So while we encourage our Mac addicted friends toward CactusVPN, any of the providers in our top 5 will serve you well.
